I’ve sat with a lot of pupils over the years on the wrong side of results day, and I’ve learned that the very first thing they need isn’t a plan. It’s a moment. Before anyone talks about resits, remarks, or next steps, a disappointing grade needs to be allowed to feel disappointing, without a parent rushing straight to fix it. That rush, however well-meant, can quietly tell a child their feelings weren’t the important part of the morning.

Take a breath before you take action

So if this is you today, or if it has been you in a previous year: let your child feel what they feel first. A grade is not a verdict on their intelligence, their effort, or who they are. Plenty of capable, hard-working pupils have a difficult results day, often for reasons that have very little to do with how well they actually understand the subject.

Then, look at the fundamentals, not just the number

Once the initial disappointment has settled, this is where I’d encourage patience over panic. A single grade doesn’t tell you where the gap actually is; it just tells you that one exists somewhere. As a Pearson Edexcel examiner, I’ve marked enough papers to know that a lower grade can come from very different places: a genuine gap in understanding, an exam technique issue, or simply a bad day under pressure. Treating all three the same, by jumping straight into generic resit revision, often wastes the exact months a child needs to actually close the real gap.

Before deciding on resits, a remark, or anything else, it’s worth properly assessing where things actually went wrong. That might mean going through the paper topic by topic, or simply having an honest conversation about how the exam felt on the day. Either way, the fix should follow the diagnosis, not the other way around.
